Ethics, good government now apparently 'liberal' issues
Sounds like the Democrats should run with it.
House Speaker David Ralston, R-Blue Ridge, told the crowd at the state GOP convention, which runs all this weekend in Columbus, Ga., that the lower chamber wouldn't "align [ourselves] with media elites and liberal special interest groups" seeking to divide the party over ethics reform.…

Review: Atlanta Ballet in New Choreographic Voices
The three short pieces that make up the Atlanta Ballet's New Choreographic Voices are abstract works without specific characters, settings or stories, but nonetheless there's about as much drama on stage as you'd ever want in an evening at the theater. The program, which ends the ballet's 2011-12 season, premiered last night and runs through the weekend at the Alliance.…

YEEK! ATL dance documentary coming soon...
Back when Ice Cube was sick of seeing brothers "on the video trying to out-dance each other," Atlanta was dancing its ass off. Fact is the early rap that came out of this city was dance music, just like the Miami bass that migrated to Atlanta in the mid-80s, forever infecting our sense of sound.…

Fresh Loaf to absorb Culture Surfing, Screen Grab
Debbie Michaud has the information over on Culture Surfing, but I thought I should put out the official word here: As of Monday, Culture Surfing and Screen Grab will no longer be live. Fresh Loaf will be expanding its mission, going from "a daily fix for news junkies" to a broader discussion about the city's news, arts, politics, and pop culture.…

Lee Ranaldo gracefully stole the show at the Buckhead Theatre
Sonic Youth guitarist Lee Ranaldo played the opening set for M. Ward and a well-behaved audience at the Buckhead Theatre on May 17. Ranaldos band, which included Alan Licht (guitar), Irwin Menken (bass), and Sonic Youth cohort Steve Shelley (drums), leaned into a set that was mostly made up of songs from Ranaldo's latest solo album, Between the Times & the Tides (Matador Records), but there were a few well-calibrated covers mixed in as well: A bombastic run through the Talking Heads Thank You for Sending Me an Angel upped the energy all around, and they closed out the set with a spacious rendition of Sonic Youths Genetic from the "My So-Called Life" soundtrack or as the more sophisticated fans like to say, its a B-side from their 1992 single, 100%.
The Buckhead Theatre gets called out a lot for sounding kind of wonky, and sure the bass could have been turned up a bit, but the mass of sound on Thursday was balanced, and never stood in the way of an impecable performance.…

Recycle, but don't recycle other people's stuff
Sometimes one man's treasure is another man's trash (don't worry, I'm quitting writing after today).
Atlanta Police caught a guy, 26-year-old Ameen Jones, who has been trolling neighborhoods, finding homes with cars in their driveways, and then selling the cars to recycling companies.…
